THIS CHIC IBIZA ESCAPE IS A FULL-ON PARTY HOUSE—EVEN WHEN MOM AND DAD ARE AROUND

Mafalda Muñoz and Gonzalo Machado, the creative minds behind Casa Muñoz, were entrusted with an unconventional project—a townhouse in the old port of Ibiza transformed into a stylish and sociable family home. The clients, a Spanish-English couple with teenage children, sought a chic and centrally located pied-à-terre that could serve as a gathering spot for their kids and friends after a night out. This home was envisioned as a fun house, offering the family a vibrant and relaxed space for socializing while providing a sense of security for the parents. It would also serve as a convenient getaway for sunny weekends, eliminating the complications of opening their larger seaside residence on the island.

Adding to the uniqueness of the project, the townhouse occupies the historic site of Paula’s Ibiza, a renowned shop that played a pivotal role in shaping Ibiçencan hippie-chic style during the 1970s. The property, discovered by the owners in a state of reconstruction, had undergone significant alterations. Casa Muñoz took charge of the transformation, reversing the previous layout and even reconstructing the staircase to ensure that the home would flow seamlessly according to their vision.

The approximately 3,000-square-foot townhouse spans four floors, with the entrance leading directly from the street into a bar and a comfortable, lounge-style living room—fitting for a residence in the vibrant party destination of Ibiza. Embracing the island’s construction traditions, the room incorporates built-in concrete sofas and end tables painted white. The proximity to the city’s port is reflected in the decor, featuring nautical elements such as ship lamps and brass bathroom fittings.

The sea-blue floors, adorned with lushly glazed lava tiles, cascade down the staircase and extend across every floor of the home, creating a visual continuity reminiscent of seafoam. This flooring choice pays homage to Mafalda Muñoz’s father, Paco Muñoz, a renowned Spanish interior designer and furniture entrepreneur. In the late 1960s, he built a chic seaside home on Mallorca with blue floors and terraces that seamlessly blended with the Mediterranean landscape, becoming an icon of Balearic modernism during Spain’s emergence from an oppressive dictatorship.

Casa Muñoz embraced a sense of freedom in the design of the Ibiza townhouse, driven by the clients’ desire to maximize sleeping accommodations for family and friends. With the mandate to provide as many beds as possible, the designers had creative freedom. On the second floor, there are two bedrooms with a total of eight beds. Four of these beds are cleverly integrated into a wall of navy-style bunk beds, concealed behind linen curtains for added privacy.

The third floor is dedicated to the primary suite, featuring a sunny seating area centered around a fireplace. The hillside location allows for a small plaza off the bedroom’s second entrance. Additionally, the floor includes a workspace that resembles an art gallery more than a traditional home office. It showcases a striking 1950s Audoux Minet desk and a Bent Møller Jepsen chair, complemented by an array of curvy ceramics.
